Over the last week, I have been re-reading the story of Joseph. Joseph’s story evidences the preparation of God now for events that will not occur until years later. When his brother’s threw him in a pit and sold him into slavery, it was not apparent to Joseph or anyone else that he would become the ruler of Egypt. When thrown in jail because of the deception of Potiphar’s wife, nobody anticipated that Joseph would begin interpreting dreams, even eventually Pharoah’s prophetic dream. Yet in all these instances, God knew exactly what He was preparing Joseph to do in the future. He knew that He needed an inside man in Egypt for the upcoming drought. He knew that by placing Joseph in jail, it was the perfect path to leadership. He knew that Pharoah would have a dream, so allowed Joseph to interpret the dreams of the Cupbearer and Baker, giving him a dream-telling reputation.
I wonder how often God is preparing us for things to happen years from now, and we complain, whine, and gripe because it’s not a part of our short-term plans? Like not getting my visa or support to leave in July–it’s certainly not my plan, but I hope I can rest in the fact that God is sovereign, that He is good, and that when it’s His timing for me to go, then at that point He will provide everything I need.
