The significance of this pair of earrings is pretty self-explanatory. Indianapolis Colts, anyone? These earrings are a staple on Sunday nights from August through January, as I support the Colts…even all the way from Tanzania. I have my parents to thank for this particular pair–they were a Christmas gift several years ago.

A Month of Earrings… (Day 3)
Apparently, wearing earrings can move an average outfit into the stunning category. I had numerous people tell me I looked gorgeous today, and that they didn’t even recognize me from a distance. My hair is done the exact same way as every other day. I’m wearing the same clothes I wear at least once a week…
A Month of Earrings… (Day 2)
These are actually my newest acquisitions, and are a bit more turquoise than the photo indicates. I purchased these at the latest Dar es Salaam Artisan’s Market on Saturday, and have already worn them twice since then! Part of the appeal of the Artisan’s Market is that the vendors are only allowed to sell things…
A Month of Earrings…and Their Stories (Day 1)
Most people know me as the crazy tomboy who rides bicycles and motorcycles, who plays sports, and hates dressing up. All that is true. But I also love earrings. And for the last several years, I’ve been collecting earrings in each of the countries I’ve gotten a chance to visit. And everywhere in-between. After posting…
I L<3VE my Life!
Repeatedly, as I went about my day yesterday, I looked around me and couldn’t help saying, “I love my life.” Sure, I might be lonely sometimes and may not have a whole group of friends to just hit up for games or a movie, but I live right on the Indian Ocean. I live in Africa!!…
Responding to Disagreements
Last week, I sat down at the snack bar for lunch with a group of fellow teachers. I work at a Christian school, but that by no means eliminates disagreements. The topic of conversation for the day was set by one of the teachers who was expressing his surprise at how many of the students…
Prayer Request
So I have no idea why I chose this picture…but I have a prayer request. In case you haven’t noticed, I love living here. Sure, there are things that are hard. But in a lot of ways, I feel as if God created me to live here. Last weekend, I applied for a position as…
Happy Friday!
Ten happy facts about today…because its Friday! 1. A veterinarian friend confirmed that I can switch Amini over to adult dog food, which is 500 times easier to find here! 2. My students loved the notes and cookies that I made for them on their last day of regular classes before exams! 3. Fun times…
Life: It Needs a Soundtrack
For the last two years, a single sheet of paper has hung over my desk at school. Among other words and phrases, this small poster includes the thought: “Your Work is Art: It Needs a Soundtrack.” Living here in Tanzania has brought out many of my more introverted tendencies, including the simple enjoyment of listening…
Climbing to the Roof of Africa
Last Friday morning, in the middle of one of Dar’s characteristic downpours, I climbed onto a bus with seventeen high school students and five other chaperones with the intent of climbing Africa’s tallest mountain: Mount Kilimanjaro. It was a typical African road trip with multiple stops because the trailer on the back of the bus…
